Q: Chef Knives to go,
I would like to buy my wife a new kitchen knife set for Christmas. I
have never bought a knife set before and I do not really know where to
begin. I am hoping to spend about 250 bucks or less out the door. My wife
cooks often. Right now we have a Boston Cutlery set with wood handles.
I would prefer not to have wood handles.
How do I know a good knife from a bad one? Are there warranties on knives?
If so what can I expect from a warranty? Can serrated knives be sharpened?
What criteria do I need to figure out in selecting a 6 piece set or a
9 piece or more? What brands should I consider?

A: Hi Marc,
I am happy to help. I usually recommend getting fewer, high quality knives
rather than getting a large set of lower quality. I use 3 knives in my
kitchen for all my cutting tasks; an 8" chef's knife, a serrated
bread knife and a paring knife. For your price range I would recommend
this Wusthof 4 Pc Set:
Wusthof 4 Pc
Set
These are high quality knives and the set comes with a steel as well as
a coupon for a free block. You could also ad a serrated bread knife like
this one:F Dick
Offset Bread Knife
The F Dick bread knife is inexpensive and I really like the offset design.
Since serrated knives are almost impossible to resharpen it is a good
idea to
get a good quality cheap one and replace it after several years.
Down the road you should get a good sharpener. If you are not interested
in learning the art of sharpening with a stone this sharpener does a good
job but hold off for a
good 6 months since your knives should not need sharpening for a while.

will assist you over the phone if you prefer.
